Louise & Kinsen Siu | South China Morning Post
A two-day Christian conference in 2009 in Hong Kong brought together business developer Louise, 28, and Kinsen, 35, an IT executive in New York. They did not see each other for another six months, until April last year, when Kinsen flew in for another conference.
The following month, Louise flew to New York for work and Kinsen offered to show her around town.
'We hung out in New York and got to know more about each other,' Louise says. On her last night in New York, Kinsen called her hotel room.
'It was a very unexpected call and he sounded very nervous,' Louise recalls. 'He said: 'I know I am not based in Hong Kong, and so much is up in the air right now, but would you consider letting me get to know you better'? I was like, 'sure'.'
When Louise returned to Hong Kong, they e-mailed each other every day and talked on Skype twice a week.
Their first official date was in June last year when Kinsen flew into town to visit Louise. 'I was really attracted to his wisdom. I was drawn to him and I just wanted to get to know him more and more. It wasn't like something I'd experienced with any other guy,' Louise says.
And the long distance was sometimes a blessing.
'Sometimes when two people are together, they don't really ask those questions to get to know each other on a deeper level,' she says.
Kinsen returned to Hong Kong in December and popped the question.
The couple are moving to Shanghai, to where Kinsen's parents have moved their family fashion business. 'It's going from long distance to no distance,' Louise says. 'I have reservations, but I think someone has to compromise in a relationship.'
